This course provides a practical step-by-step approach to identifying a funding need, researching funding sources, preparing a winning proposal, and laying the groundwork for successfully completing the grant project. At the end of the course students will be able to develop ideas and research funding resources, write a need statement, define goals and objectives, develop methods, work plans, and budgets, and evaluate and leverage future funding strategies.

Course Objectives

  • Students will get familiar with grants, how to find them and what goes into writing a good grant.

In this lesson, students will learn:

    • what a grant is
    • the best place to search for available grants
    • to ask for help from experienced grant writers
    • to recognize the grant application by it's many names
    • to contact the funder

Students will also learn what goes into:

    • writing the grant proposal
    • the key element - what grantors want
    • finalizing your grant - edit, edit, edit
  • Successful grant writing involves planning, searching for data and resources, preparing and writing the proposal, submission and follow-up. Here, we take a more detailed look into the preparation and writing phases.
  • In Lesson 3 & 4, we will be getting much deeper into what is involved in the actual writing of the grant proposal. You will develop a much better understanding of each area of the proposal and the detail you must go to in each section to achieve the desired results - a winning grant.
  • Find out more about information you should provide grantors regarding future funding, budgets, additional information which should be sent along with the proposal and it's appearance.
  • The grantseekers checklist is a good way to review everything you have learned so far, making sure you have not forgotten anything when preparing and writing your proposal.
  • One of the best resources available is finding out what funders have to say about grant proposals. Since they are the ones reviewing grant proposals on a regular basis, what they say should be given extra weight when being considered. These are the experts who make the final decision on who wins the grants.
